Topography & Mapping
Aims
The topographical survey will be held during the months of July and August 2012. The aims of the topographical survey in 2012 are:
- to maintain the current topographic map of the Sagalassos, Düzen Tepe and the area connecting these two excavation sites;
- to survey new, previously unmapped areas within the boundaries of Sagalassos, Düzen Tepe and the area connecting these two excavation sites;
- to support planned excavations in the Sagalassos area (Catal Oluk 1, Roman Baths, Domestic Area, Macellum, Upper Agora South-East Gate, area east of Library and several excavations in the area formerly indicated as Potters’ Quarter) by setting out grid sectors (5m x 5m) in the local coordinate system and doing topographical measurements (either new measurements or maintenance of the current map);
- to support the survey team working in the Sagalassos territorium by doing topographical measurements.
In addition to general topographical measurements, the survey equipment will also be used to create a 3D representation of several monuments in the Sagalassos city center, in particular the Roman Baths. Similar measurements have been done in 2011 at the Theatre and the Domestic Area (villa).
Methodology
For the topographical survey common land surveying techniques will be used:
- high precision measurements using total station or level;
- medium precision GNSS measurements (using the TUSAGA Aktif CORS-TR network)
For the capturing of monuments in 3D, a laser scanner will be used as well as photogrammetric techniques.
