Pottery Studies: aims for the 2011 campaign
Aims
The processing of pottery is an important task in the archaeological study of Sagalassos, supporting the ongoing excavations and surveys with dates for loci and collections, as well as providing insights into particular aspects of ancient society as highlighted through the sherds. Apart from these standard procedures, some specific find collections will be investigated in 2011. The tools, moulds and wasters of the late Roman Coroplast workshop will be examined in detail in order to study the way individual potters organized their métier, and how they used the spaces of the workshop. Deposits excavated in previous years in the Macellum will be re-examined in detail, in order to provide more insight into the chronology and nature of use and abandonment of the different parts of the monument. A new attempt at seriating assemblages from Düzen Tepe will be launched, which could hopefully result in a more detailed knowledge of the chronological development of these wares. Also the survey material from the Hellenostic-Roman village near Körüstan will be inventoried in detail, representing a unique potential at studying a small community within the territory of Sagalassos. Finally, all Hellenistic deposits from earlier excavations at Sagalassos will be considered in detail, in order to unravel the socio-cultural network of which these wares form part.
